Social-emotional learning is a major part of developing our learners, but it does not always get the emphasis it deserves. If you want to incorporate more social-emotional learning into your day, I have a great company to introduce you to.
Slumberkins is an emotional learning company working to empower children to be more caring, confident, and resilient. The company was created by friends Kelly and Callie. They started the business in their living room and have grown to sell globally, as well as in a variety of retailers.
Slumberkins has created 16 different themes/skills that they base their characters and stories around. They are authenticity, building connections, change, conflict resolution, creativity, emotional courage, emotional well-being, gratitude, grief and loss, growth mindset, mindfulness, routines, self-acceptance, self-esteem, self-expression, and stress relief. These skills are expressed through the following characters: alpaca, bigfoot, dragon, fox, hammerhead, honey bear, ibex, lynx, narwhal, otter, sloth, sprite, unicorn, yak, yeti, and the feels. Not only do they have these core characters and messages, but they also create special edition characters and themes.
There are a variety of options and items to choose from depending on what you want your learner to get out of them. You can buy the plush with the book, just the plush, or just the book. Each book contains messages about one of the themes/skills. Not only can you purchase the books, but there are also free resources on their website and a blog.
If you want even more from the themes, you can also purchase the big books and the curriculum for each of the skills. These curriculum bundles are downloaded, which means you can print them, however, you would like.
I have been using Slumberkins with my own kids for 3 ½ years, as well as incorporating the characters and lessons into my classroom. These characters and lessons are great for everyone from teachers to parents, to therapists, and more.
